Load Up on These Heart-Healthy Foods This American Heart Month

Eating more of these foods will improve your cardiovascular health.

February is American Heart Month, a month that encourages the public to take better care of their heart health.  One major goal of this month is getting Americans to incorporate more heart-healthy foods into their diets.  To improve your cardiovascular health this February, here are some of the foods that you should load up on.

  • Avocados

Contrary to what you might believe, no all fat is bad for you.  The monosaturated fats found in avocados are extremely heart-healthy and have been linked to lower cholesterol levels and a reduced risk for heart disease.  Additionally, avocados are an excellent source of potassium which can help lower your blood pressure and risk of stroke.

  • Berries

Berries are a great source of polyphenols, antioxidants that fight against damaging free radicals.  Additionally, berries offer a healthy dose of fiber and Vitamin C which have both been linked to lowering the risk of stroke.  Raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are all great fruits to work into your diet this month.

  • Walnuts

While small, walnuts have major health benefits.  For instance, walnuts are rich in fiber and micronutrients such as magnesium, copper, and manganese.  According to research, eating walnuts can help lower bad LDL cholesterol levels, reduce diastolic blood pressure, and decrease oxidative stress and inflammation.  Other studies have suggested that ingesting walnuts can help you lower your risk for heart disease.

  • Legumes

Legumes such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, and the like are a great source of soluble fiber, which has been proven to lower your bad LDL cholesterol.  As an added bonus, legumes are a much more heart-healthy source of protein than fatty red meats and processed meat products.

Here are some of the foods that you should eat to improve your cardiovascular health.  Want another way to take care of yourself this month?  Then make sure you have the right insurance protections in place.  For assistance with all your personal and commercial coverage needs, contact the experts at CIA Insurance and Risk Management today.
